Windows Server 2012 Fax error 0xC0000005

I have been very frustrated for the past 3 months, ever since upgrading to Server 2012. Microsoft Fax has been unreliable. The fax service stops frequently with

The Fax Service Provider 'Microsoft Modem Device Provider' encountered a problem and needed to close.
Error Code: 0xC0000005
This error code indicates the cause of the error.
A Windows Error Report was generated with full details about the problem.
The Fax service will restart now.

At first I thought it was the modem. I replaced it, and it seemed to work better for a while, but the fax service kept stopping with that error.  What was weird is that some faxes would come through fine.  I reinstalled fax services, moved from virtual hardware to physical hardware, thinking maybe there was something about the virtualization that was messing with it.

It turned out to be a bug in FXST30.DLL.  I learned about it this thread.  It mentions windows 8.1.   Evidently this bug is also in recent updates for Server 2012.   Not trusting random DLL downloads from the internet, I grabbed the DLL from one of my Windows 7 64bit machines, and problem solved.

gluster peer probe: failed: Probe returned with unknown errno 107

If you get unknown errno 107 when you do a “gluster peer probe othermachine” then you have got a network problem.

Check the following:

  • check the output of iptables-save for any firewall rules that might be interfering, on both machines
  • make sure glusterd is running on both machines
  • make sure you can actually ping the other machine
  • both machines need to have a valid gateway set up

It is probably one of those.  In any case, it is a network problem.

How to set resolution on E02 thin client with Multipoint Server 2012

Microsoft Multipoint Server 2012 is amazing.  However, a lot of things changed since Multipoint 2011 and the documentation has not kept up.  Adding to that problem is the various ways of connecting to multipoint – RDP, Direct Connect Video, Zero Client etc.  Trying to figure out how to set the resolution was a challenge, because it it not documented.

To set the resolution, you need to login on the Multipoint Server Console, start the Multipoint Manager and enable Console Mode (formerly called Maintenance mode in older documentation).  Once console mode is enabled you can click the little orange icon in your system tray.  This program is also referred to as MCT Custom Presenter, but you can’t search for it to run it.  If it isn’t there, then you need to make sure you are logged in as the user who installed the driver.  For me, the actual system tray executable, not a shortcut to it, was installed at

C:\Users\administrator\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\FBRAppx.exe

If you don’t see it in your system tray you might need to enable its visibility by clicking the uparrow and choose “Customize” and enable the icon and notifications.

Anyway, rightclick the icon and you’ll see a program that lists all your connected thin clients and you can choose the resolution for each thin client from a dropdown menu and click the Apply button.

Go back into Multipoint Manager and switch back to Station mode.  Your Multipoint Server will reboot and your E02 thin clients will be running at the resolution you chose.

I found my first clue that this program even existed from here:

IE Downloaded file “Save” and “Save as” buttons do not work for PDF

If you are using a web application that generates PDF files for you to download and view or print, you may eventually run into this problem.  If the web application does not generate a new filename for each PDF, eventually you will have more than 1000 PDF files with the same name and IE will silently stop working.

For example if the generated PDF file is called Download.pdf, the first time you download the file, it will be called Download.pdf.  The second time it will be Download(1).pdf .  The thousandth time it will be called Download(999).pdf.  After that, you will not be able to download the file any more.

The solution is to empty your downloads folder.

XSLX file will not open on a webdav share from OSX

Affects Apache with Webdav.   Symptoms include:

  • When you double click an .xlsx file on the share, excel says it is in incorrect format. When you drag the file to your desktop it still won’t open.  Excel says the file is the incorrect format and offers to repair the file.
  • When you try to expand a .zip file using the Archive utility, it won’t work while on the webdav share, but if you drag the .zip file to your desktop it will open fine.

This could be caused by mod_mime.  I disabled the mime magic and mime modules in apache, and the problem went away for me.  After you disable the modules, you will need to reboot your mac because the file you were trying to open gets cached somehow by Finder and it won’t work util you reboot.
